Reversed, Death shifts toward clinging to the past, fear of change, and stagnation. A reversal is rarely the plain opposite of the upright card — it more often reads as the same energy blocked, turned inward, running in excess, or only just beginning to release. If reversals feel like too much while you are learning, it is perfectly normal to read every card upright at first and add them in later.

Death is card XIII of the Major Arcana — the twenty-two cards that deal with the big turning points and life lessons rather than day-to-day detail. It is the great ending of the arc, clearing ground rather than punishing. Major Arcana cards tend to carry more weight in a spread than the minors around them; when one turns up, it is usually naming the theme the whole reading is about.
