Reversed, Temperance shifts toward excess, imbalance, and impatience. A reversal is rarely the plain opposite of the upright card — it more often reads as the same energy blocked, turned inward, running in excess, or only just beginning to release. If reversals feel like too much while you are learning, it is perfectly normal to read every card upright at first and add them in later.
Where Temperance sits in the deck
Temperance is card XIV of the Major Arcana — the twenty-two cards that deal with the big turning points and life lessons rather than day-to-day detail. It is the slow reconciliation of what Death separated. Major Arcana cards tend to carry more weight in a spread than the minors around them; when one turns up, it is usually naming the theme the whole reading is about.
Reading Temperance in a spread
When Temperance appears alongside mostly Minor Arcana cards, treat it as the headline and the minors as detail. Two or more majors in one spread usually means the question is larger than the one you asked.
